Cover crop Air Tractors to work Tuesday in Holmes

The Holmes Soil and Water Conservation District will conduct its aerial cover crop program (weather permitting) on Tuesday, Sept. 8, from the Holmes County Airport.

Fisher Ag Services from Cardington will fly yellow and blue Air Tractors. Residents should be used to seeing these planes, as this is the 11th year of the aerial application program.

The aerial program is part of a bigger cover crop program organized through the Holmes SWCD office, as many farmers also drill cover crops after harvest. For 2020, the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District is providing cost-share funding in excess of $40,000 on 3,000 acres in Holmes County, as part of an ongoing program that covers the 18 counties within the Muskingum River watershed.

Michelle Wood, program administrator of the Holmes SWCD, said that the three seeds being spread in this program are oats, rye and barley.

The cover crops go over existing fields of soybeans, and provide protection against erosion in the fields over the winter.
